The Houhora Fishing Club held their inaugural meeting on March 29th 1990 in the Araiawa Hall Pukenui. The support for the club was strong with seventy people in attendance.
In the early days the Araiawa Hall and the Houhora Hotel was the ‘clubrooms’, a place where members planned the future home of the club.

Site work began on the new clubrooms at Monkey Point in 1993 with the clearing of trees in readiness for earth moving and reclamation work.
The development of the clubrooms is testament to the extraordinary community spirit that only exists in small communities. The facility boasts a wharf, weigh station, 2 lane concrete boat ramp, St Johns station & public toilets.

I would be very interested to know if anything is known of the Pukenui Club set up in 1927 by my grandfather who came to live in NZ from England. This info has only just come to light in family correspondence.
